SEVEN LIONS

Rave days are Thursday’s…Friday’s, Saturday’s or any day really! Since every day is a great day to dance, it’s become a habit of mine to attend the multitude of shows at the local venue, The Marc.

The Marc is located in the heart of the historic downtown square of San Marcos, TX. Their calendar of events typically ranges from country, rap, and EDM. As of late, raves have become a huge hit and have been attracting the masses to all of their shows.

Due to it’s rising popularity, they have blossomed into one of the best venues in its area for hosting shows and have booked some of the biggest names in the game including, Excision, Major Lazer, Rezz, and NGHTMRE.

They continue to sell out shows within seconds and are making a name for themselves around the city and in the rave community.

Their most recent show featured Seven Lions, so likewise, my friends and I dressed up and headed down to the sold-out show for a good time and a night filled with dancing.

Seven Lions is an instrumentalist and DJ from Santa Barbra, California, who recently announced the formation of his own record label, Ophelia, in which he will be releasing all of his music. Watch the recap from his show below which features his popular single, “Strangers.”

If this made you feel like dancing, you know where to go! See all you rave babes out there for the next show at The Marc.

SUN/SETS

As many friends of mine have come to learn, I am a major sunset enthusiast! It’s the perfect time of the day to sit back and reflect on life and the little things. It’s become a daily habit of mine to head to the top of a parking garage or a rooftop lounge to gaze at the colorful view while the sun sets over the city.

“Sunsets are proof that no matter what happens every day can end beautifully.” – Kristen Butler

To my surprise, at a recent sunset, my friends and I stumbled across a live band rehearsing and filming a video for their submission to NPR’s Tiny Desk Series. The bands’ name is Atrox Box, a jazz/hip-hop group based out of San Marcos, Texas.

My fellow friends and I joined in by dancing and clapping along with the high energy band and ended our day with the perfect jam session and sunset. It’s tiny instances like this that make life all the more worthwhile.

Watch the short story below of our time on the roof, and then check out some groovy tunes from the awesome local band, Atrox Box!

Interview: Meet Alex

It seems like a lot of people I know are doing some really cool stuff with their lives and creating something out of their passions and desires, so I decided to go out and interview a friend who is doing just that.

Meet Alex Helm, a guy pursuing life through the lens, capturing all of his exciting moments with his Nikon D2300. Helm started his own multimedia brand, Helm Visuals, as an outlet for him to promote what he is capable of.

Helm captures his day to day life by taking portraits of his alluring friends and filming his hobbies. Some typical content you may see Helm produce consists of portrait style photos, as well as video footage of wakeboarding, longboarding, traveling, and of course, partying.

Helm is hard working, and his art naturally catches the attention of others. He has an eye for the water and surrounds himself with positive “beachy” vibes, all which were influenced from the West Coast in California. In the interview, he explains his passions, influences, and style in his own words. Check it out the video and meet, Alex.

In addition, check out Helm’s, “Daydreaming,” as explained in the interview as one of his “most memorable” and most recent productions.

Provided below are some portrait style photos taken by Helm.

The Beauty of Blogging

Today, I was reflecting on the beauty of blogging and how running a site about my passions and daily activities has been so rewarding. For me, blogging has been a way for me to enhance what I share on my social media about my life. I’ve reflected my thoughts on blogging through a series of questions below. Have a look if you’re considering exploring the blogging lifestyle…

  • Which tools are effective? Which aren’t?

In blogging, the effective tools to be successful include captivating photography, passion on the topic, and a creative writing style. If you don’t have any of these three things, it will be hard for an audience to follow.

  • What would you want to improve or include within the blog?

The theme. I think the layout of a website can make or break whether it is successful or not.

  • In what ways could the experience benefit you in the future?

I’m hoping to add more festival coverage and music-oriented content to the site. With that being said, I hope to further my career in the industry by growing as a writer and knowledgeable reviewer.

  • Discuss how you might implement these tools professionally in the future, in a job or an entrepreneurial endeavor.

I plan on implementing the emmofe brand into my life long career. Where it’s going is unknown, but I plan on pursuing it as a personally owned brand, enhancing my life in a way that allows me to have multiple outlets of passion for focusing on, whether it’s music, life, art or food.

  • What has been your most popular week, and how many views and visitors did you get that week?

October 3-9. I received 208 views and 88 visitors.

  • Which was your most popular post of the year? How many views did it get? Why do you think it was the most popular?

My most popular post of the year thus far was titled “Meet Toyosi,” receiving 56 views. I think it populated the most views because Toyosi and I graduated from the same high school, so many of my friends on social media wanted to read about an old friends success.

  • In all of the Site Stats data, was anything surprising to you?

Yes, I’m shocked by the amount of traffic I was able to draw in. I didn’t expect the audience I’ve been receiving, so I think I’ll keep pursuing it after the class with the numbers I’m seeing.

  • Do you have any Twitter, Facebook or other social media stats you want to share?

No, but checking insights is always fun to see what impact you have on the online social community.

Louie’s Oyster House & Beer Garden

Football season is here…and so is the weekend! That means I’m out and about somewhere on the city streets enjoying the day as much as possible before sunset. By nightfall, I tend to hit the bars for happy hour with my sister, Miranda.

With football season in full swing, Miranda and I made arrangement’s to watch the Cowboy’s game at a local beer garden on the square in San Marcos, TX. Personally, I don’t care much for football, but I’m always down for drinks and good company. Our place of choice for the night was an outdoor sports bar with a surf and turf ambiance called, Louie’s Oyster House & Beer Garden.

Louie’s offers over 100 beers, along with a full bar and menu. However, the restaurant is family-friendly and offers an outdoor stage for live music and a playground for the kids. If crawfish is in season, the restaurant even hosts regular crawfish boils for the community.

Seafood is very prevalent on the menu here, but there are always other options for those who don’t eat fishy friends. Me being one of those people, I stuck to ordering one of their sides to snack on. The onion rings shown above are seasoned and battered with cajun spices that pair perfectly with a Deep Eddy Vodka soda or Dos Equis.

Next time you’re on the square and need a drink or some good fried food, stop by Louie’s and see what’s poppin’!

O’Neill’s House of Fashion

Cool brisk air sweeping in at 65 degrees, composed with the smell of firewood and christmas trees has finally caught wind and made it’s way to San Marcos, Texas.

A new season is always exciting because I get inspired when it comes to the wardrobe. There are so many opportunities to utilize last seasons finds with new ones. In other words, it’s time to get creative and put together something you’ll look captivating in!

Jo’s Cafe

What’s up with the little blue house on the corner of North and Mary Street?

The brightly colored house sits on a small hill, with a surrounding patio out front. Once inside, it almost feels like walking into someone’s home with a few dining chairs accompanied by small tables, a couch, wall paintings, and a chef whipin’ it up in the kitchen.

Jo’s Café posses a lengthy menu of specialty coffees, teas, and other drinks. If you’re hungry or have the munchies, they also serve up breakfast anytime and lunch after 11am.

With this week consisting of National Taco Day—unfortunately a day I missed celebrating—I took it upon myself to seek out some tacos today!

Not wanting to travel far due to the unexpected and terrifying occurrences of last nights chainsaw carrying clown running the streets of San Marcos, I figured it’d be safe to stay close to home, and walked over to the neighborhood coffee house.

Being from Austin, I have a slight obsession with breakfast tacos, so it wasn’t just the fact I missed National Taco Day, I was also just really in the mood for a taco. I’m pretty sure tacos stand for something like, “terribly addictive choice of snack,” but hey, maybe that’s just me.

Even if you’re not in Austin, it is still possible to find a bangin’ breakfast taco. Here at the little blue house, I promise you will. You can get creative and choose all your desired ingredients, so stop in a give it a try if you’ve been having breakfast taco withdrawals like me.

What’s all the Buzz about? – Buzzmill Coffee

Starting on East Riverside in Austin, TX, The Buzz Mill gained a name that came to be known as “the lumberjack society” of the city. Their mission for fellow ‘lumberjacks’ was to engage and inspire local neighbors into becoming woodsmen by instilling values, traits, and necessary skills for living off the land.

Last week, the company opened their newest location in San Marcos, TX, expanding their society of lumberjacks to surrounding cities in Texas. If you haven’t heard of them already, Buzzmill is a 24-hour full service bar filled with food, coffee, and alcoholic beverages. The coffee is locally roasted, but if a cup of joe isn’t usually the way you go, you can also indulge in home-made infused liquors inside their “fort,” or outside on their patio accompanied by a giant wooden bear carve out.

With Monday classes being cancelled the week of September 26th, I decided to venture out to the newest coffee shop on the block to see what the San Marcos location was all about. Walking in and being immediately greeted by a few local ‘hipsters,’ or, ‘lumberjacks,’ as they like to call themselves, I sought to try something new. However, before I could even look for the full menu of drinks that the institution had yet to even hang up, the barista winked at me and assured me she’d make me something good–It was a wink I couldn’t deny.

Once the steamy beverage hit the counter, the barista prompted me to give it a try. The thick creamy liquid hit my tastebuds, and a taste of a dark roast, honey, and half and half danced over my tastebuds in astonishment. Knowing I would want to order it in the future, the barista shared the name with me as “The Honey Badger.” If the description hasn’t made your mouth water for your own, I highly recommend this as your first drink at the fort. Furthermore, if you’re not looking for a drink, try out one of their bangin’ burgers or a breakfast choice like the cheese, sausage, and jalapeno kolaches. Weather you and your friends are looking for food, fun, or drinks, this is the place to go! I highly recommend you check out the newest spot in the 78666.
